Cloud computing is one of the most innovative technologies in the information technology sector, and it emerged in the last decade. Cloud computing is a delivery model of online software, information, applications, data, and computing resources (Frankenfield, 2020). These services are utilized by significant technological corporations such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform (Kishore, 2024). It is a revolutionary model compared to the installed model in which a firm must incur capital expenditure to purchase and develop its own IT platform and applications. In cloud computing, these resources are available on demand, as required, and paid only for the actual usage rather than the cost of the physical entities, the capital investments, and the operational overheads incurred when the resources are owned and used instead of leased.

The following is the breakdown of the pay-as-you-go model and its benefits that explain the popularity of cloud computing in various industries: First, the model provides flexibility and high availability that can be achieved only for a high cost or without sufficient resources in the on-premise infrastructure. For instance, considering a scenario where a company receives many orders. The company can immediately acquire extra computing power from the cloud provider and return it as soon as the demand decreases. This elasticity reduces the necessity of offering additional resources during peak hours, thereby leading to massive cost savings. In addition, using cloud computing shifts most tasks associated with administering and supporting the IT environment to the CSP (Mohamed et al., 2021). A provider oversees ordinary IT tasks which comprises of the software upgrades, security patches, and hardware maintenance. As a result, these prevents organizations from being bogged down by IT management. This may also enhance efficiency, increase productivity, and accelerate innovation and development.

Moreover, this is also a substantial benefit, as cloud computing allows collaboration and gives access to data and applications from anywhere the Internet connection is possible. This is particularly useful in large organizations where business processes are spread across various regions or information dissemination is required to employees, partners, or customers in distant locations. Business continuity, disaster recovery, and data backup are also excellent in the cloud setup. In addition, it also helps sustain business operations during a system failure or disaster. However, companies face some disadvantages when implementing cloud computing services to improve them.

Data security and privacy remain significant concerns in most organizations because they are, in essence, outsourcing their critical data and workloads to a third party. Cloud providers have ensured that security is well enhanced through investments and that the security of the cloud is well enhanced. Some of the main security features of the cloud security comprise of encryption, access controls, and compliance certifications (Ashley, 2024). In addition, according to Baisan (2022), the cloud compliance comprises of governance, threat modelling, frameworks, shared responsibility, regulations, and encryption. However, the current high-profile data breaches have shifted the focus and demands for more prudence and diligence in risk management and governance.

The other factor is the complexity of the cloud services. It is normal for an organization to have a hybrid environment combining public, private, and traditional data centers (Raza, 2020). The overall use of resources in this scenario of hybrid cloud models might sometimes be complex to manage and hence requires skills and application. In addition, there is the risk of vendor lock-in, which means that switching from one cloud provider to another is not easy, and the process can be expensive since one has to transfer applications and data. Nevertheless, the issues do not impede the development of cloud computing at all. For some reason, as pointed out by industry experts, the consumption of cloud services is expected to increase quickly. For example, technologies like artificial intelligence, IoT, and big data analytics need the scalability and processing power available in the cloud.

Concerning the future trends, it is possible to conclude that the field of cloud computing will continue to evolve. As a result, edge computing, proposed to offer computing services closer to where data is generated, represents an antithetical concept to the current cloud model. This approach can reduce the latency and bandwidth for applications that require real-time processes like IoT and self-driving cars. Furthermore, serverless computing, which does not require handling servers at all, is gradually becoming an approach that simplifies the application creation and deployment.

As a result, cloud computing can be considered a new paradigm shift in the management of IT infrastructure and services among organizations (Lavinsky, 2024). Even though some concerns are still valid, the benefits associated with scalability, flexibility, cost efficiency, and openness have ensured that the cloud is now a fundamental part of modern IT environments. Looking at the future of technology, cloud computing will play a crucial role in delivering innovations to different industries in the near future.
