Even though technological innovations and advancements have introduced a lot of benefits in society, they have also brought about certain concerns regarding their impact on forming solid relationships. Therefore, the effect of technology on human interactions is more reliant on positive and negative impacts on society.

Technological advancement has been credited for yielding a positive effect on the extent to which human beings communicate with one another across the globe, irrespective of geographical location. In the present times, one can create a social connection with others from any part of the world with the help of the internet, social networking sites and other web applications which are available for using different online tools and options like video conferencing. Studies suggested that out of the global population, at least 60% is now using the Internet; there are over 4.6 billion active Internet users in the world, which proves that technology is being adopted across the globe (Olsson et al., 2020). In this context, it is possible to state that, both business and personal long-distance relationships appear to have become significantly easier and more feasible in the modern world (Olsson et al., 2020). Also, by incorporating the use of technology, different partners and clients specific to one country may collaborate with those in different countries, which fosters innovation and development. Hence, technology is a critical enabler in improving rich human interactions as it narrows down geographical isolation between users.

Additionally, the introduction of technology has democratized access to information and knowledge, thereby enriching interpersonal communication. The use of social media platforms has grown much popularity among people, hence becoming easily accessible sites for people to interact with one another without barriers. Other types of friendships have emerged as internet-based through gaming, bulletin boards, and chats, thus enabling individuals to socialize with others of their choice, irrespective of their geographical location. Therefore, in this situation, technology has played a great role in forming stable social relationships where people interact freely with one another.

However, although technological advancements and innovations have yielded numerous benefits and enhanced human interactions, they have also brought about certain negative implications. For instance, the use of technology has eroded the quality of face-to-face interactions and interpersonal relationships. Technology has led to the emergence of devices such as smartphones, and this has seen some people develop fake friendships and only focus on online friendships (Vargo et al., 2021). Dining tables that were earlier filled with family discourses are replaced by meals where everyone, including the elderly, has their faces glued to their handset screens, liking, sharing, or responding to posts on Facebook or any other social media platform instead of communicating with other family members. This negative behavior of ignoring friends or family members in favor of a phone screen has been described as “phubbing” or phone snubbing and has sparked debates on the social cost of technology that has eroded the closeness of relationships (Karaman Aksentijević et al., 2021). Therefore, it proves the negative implication that technology brings about where active distractions on devices replace the level of interactions among people.

Moreover, the use of technology has also caused a lot of anonymity through online platforms, which has led to the proliferation of cyberbullying and toxic behavior. Therefore, it may alter the lives of human beings, exposing them to mental health issues as a result of the negativity that comes from acts such as toxic behaviors and cyberbullying.

Despite the challenges presented by the implications of technological usage, it is essential to adopt a balanced approach to the use of technology in interpersonal communication to help create a balanced society. It is crucial to remember that technology cannot replace face-to-face communication, yet its abilities should be used to strengthen rather than replace person-to-person communication (Karaman Aksentijević et al., 2021). For instance, video calls can be utilized to sustain significant relationships with individuals who reside in different locations but do not need to be physically present to get medical attention. Likewise, social networking is also a way of reconnecting with friends and other people known through using the internet; however, it should not be misunderstood as disabling people from engaging in face-to-face conversations and activities (Karaman Aksentijević et al., 2021). Therefore, the integration of technology across the globe should be embraced fully, and people to adjust to the modern technological techniques that are more adaptable in forming stable human interactions.

Educational initiatives and public awareness campaigns can also play crucial roles in promoting responsible and empathetic online behavior. n imparting and practicing digital skills, incorporating and respecting everyone irrespective of gender, the global society can be able to foster a protective culture online to fight cases of harassment coupled with the promotion of a self-fulfilling authentic identity (Karaman Aksentijević et al., 2021). Also, the platforms and application developers must ensure that they check the sort of features in their platforms that may complicate or hinder positive interaction while enhancing policies that ensure privacy protection (Roblek et al., 2020). Through this technique, it becomes easier to establish a safe and secure technological environment where human interactions can be established successfully without barriers.
