Reflection on The Eighth Day of Creation

When I was reading “The Eighth Day of Creation" by Horace Freeland Judson, I could get a clear and deep idea about the revolution in the field of molecular biology. The book tells the story of the discoveries in the field in great detail, pays attention to the major players – Watson, Crick, Monod, and Sanger and stresses their discoveries about DNA and genetic code (Judson, 1979). These facts enlightened me on the background of these discoveries, where scientists remained competitors and partners simultaneously. Descriptions of the experiments, including the discovery of the double helix structure of DNA, the identification of messenger RNA, and the creation of sequencing methods, depict the rigorous, inventive, and persistent behaviors needed to accomplish these achievements. The book also reveals their life experiences and how they are interrelated, giving the reader a human background look into these scientists and their work.

Before reading this book, my knowledge of molecular biology has been challenged and expanded to a great extent. At first, many terms and explained details of the experiment resembled a sophisticated code and were extremely close to being incomprehensible. However, Judson's engaging narrative and clear explanations helped demystify the subject, making it more accessible and understandable. The book also explains how even such non-physical doctrines as gene regulation, protein synthesis, and genetic code have real experimental bases supported by earnest work and creativity (Judson, 1979). It also illustrates the integrated approach to science, which involves the work of geneticists, biochemists, and structural biologists. This has enriched my understanding of the evolution of scientific concepts over time, the acquisition of scientific knowledge over time, and the complex network of works that have led to the current state of knowledge of molecular biology.

The key takeaway from "The Eighth Day of Creation" is the profound importance of perseverance, curiosity, and collaboration in scientific endeavors. Learning about every step and obstacle faced by the founders of the scientific method helps us appreciate the importance of effort, analysis, and determination in forming knowledge. Also, I will continue to explore and learn; positivism towards the unknown and challenges are always good; the more challenges there are, the better. I shall benefit from this book by using the insights it provides as a compass in my future endeavors, and I will be encouraged by the fact that great things can be accomplished through hard work and cooperation.
