Network Design and Communications
Network design is crucial in creating efficient computer and communication systems. The essential features of any distributed OS should include the ability to handle objects or processes, memory, files, devices, and networks (Mayukha & Vadivel, 2021). Tolerance for failure at a site or communication link, the expense of lengthy communication lines, the difficulty of linking one site to many other sites, quick communication among all sites, and other design trade-offs are all part of network architecture. The benefits and drawbacks of various network models, architectures, and implementations are detailed here.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Different Network Designs

Order nowVirtual Local Area Networks (VLAN)
Network traffic may be partitioned into many virtual networks using a VLAN architecture. The capability to segregate traffic into its own VLANs enhances the results of the network's performance and security measures (Shah et al., 2023). Advantages of VLANs include enhanced management and performance, flexibility of the network, increased security, and UIL and cable cost savings. Shah et al. (2023) agree that VLAN has some disadvantages, wherein setting up the network is more complex, the management is more complicated, and there are more risks or mistakes during the setup process.
Local Area Networks (LAN)
One form of network structure is geo-dependent: the local area network or LAN. The embracing of LANs, which can be wired or wireless, has benefits such as increased network speed, central processing and data storage, and increased file sharing. LAN's Several demerits are the high installation cost and limited geographical reach (Mayukha & Vadivel, 2021).
Metropolitan Area Networks (MAN)
A MAN includes a larger geographical area than a LAN and expands from a local area network. One common way of connecting computer networks in the urban area is through MANs. Due to their high bandwidth and speed, MANs are suitable for business applications (Mayukha & Vadivel, 2021). Some advantages of MANs include higher data capacity, faster data transfer and the ability to interconnect several LANs. Still, several disadvantages are associated with MANs, including being expensive to set up and maintain.
Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN)
As its name implies, a WLAN is a kind of LAN that operates via wireless technology. Wireless local area networks (WLANs) link electronic devices like cellphones, tablets, and laptops using Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. WLAN design's many benefits are its portability, simplicity of installation and administration, adaptability, and substantial reductions in cable costs. However, there are drawbacks, such as potential security risks, interference, a small range, and poor bandwidth (Mayukha & Vadivel, 2021).
Employer’s Network Design
My employer's network design is a hybrid of all the above network designs. The LAN design offers centralized data storage, processing, and file sharing within the office workplace. The WAN design connects the office to various remote locations and our clients' branch offices. Inter-office communication is enhanced through the MAN design with high-speed connectivity between different offices in the City. Lastly, WLANs offer me and my colleagues wireless connectivity to the company's network from anywhere in the office.
In conclusion, a network's design is vital in creating efficient computer and communication systems. VLAN, LAN, MAN, and WLAN designs offer numerous benefits and downsides, depending on the organization's needs, geographical location, and Budget. Network designers must consider four criteria: essential cost, communications cost, reliability, and user environment when deciding which configuration to use. Combining all or some of these designs can help organizations create flexible, secure, cost-effective networks that facilitate efficient data sharing and storage.
