There are times that slowly change how one sees his or her own potential. One of those experiences occurred to me when I spent two hours in the library during my sophomore year working with a fellow student named Daniel on some of the algebra concepts he had been challenged with for several weeks. When he finally solved a problem by himself, looked up with a smile and said, "I did that," I knew helping somebody else succeed was more satisfying than any class ever could have been. That afternoon created a seed that's sprouted into the values that I carry into every facet of my academic and community life, values that I believe are the same as National Honor Society values.

Scholarship is my academic identity but always in service to a bigger purpose than just a transcript. All through high school, I have had above a 3.9 GPA, taken six Advanced Placement classes, and made the Principal's Honor Roll every semester. Nonetheless, most of what I truly carry from high school did not come from studying all night before a test. These are the ones I struggled with, engaged and absorbed in an honest inquiry. A unit in my AP Environmental Science class inspired me months-long independent reading adventure and a research paper that I submitted to a regional student science competition. For me, learning is not limited to a syllabus. It's a lifelong dialogue with the world.

My most significant growth has occurred in my time leading others. During my junior year of high school, I ran for the student government association Treasurer, not because I liked the idea of the title, but rather because I felt that our school's funding system for clubs was unfair and inequitable, specifically that the funding model favored the larger, more established clubs over the newly formed/less established organizations. I campaigned on a platform of transparency and also proposed an entirely new way to analyze the budgets of all clubs, regardless of size, to provide each organization an equal opportunity to present and explain how much money they were requesting. After winning the election, I spent my first month meeting with all of the club presidents to understand their financial difficulties better than I had previously. After meeting with over 20 different clubs' Presidents, I revised the budget proposal submitted to the administrative office and received an approval of approximately 15% more funding than the previous year for those student groups who were not represented in the SGA funding/ranking system. This experience demonstrated to me that true leadership is not based on one's title or position, but rather on how well you can listen to others in order that you may be able to act wisely and to the best of your ability.

Perhaps the value which has most consistently defined my outside the classroom identity is service. Research suggests that community service contributes to personal growth and promotes civic engagement among young people (Wray‐Lake et al., 2024). For the last two years, I have been volunteering with a local nonprofit, Food Supply Share house, every other Saturday. We give food to about 300 families every Saturday. I don't think I have ever learned so many lessons about strength, about resilience, dignity, and how much quietly endure to keep up appearances as I have learned while working at this center. In December I helped put on a winter clothing drive at school, where we donated more than 400 items to the share house's clients. Service is not something I do to add to my CV. I do this because I believe that a community is as strong as its ability to care for its weakest members.

Character, the fourth attribute for NHS membership, is the pursuit I am most intentional about. I have admittedly made mistakes, including one during a group project in freshman year, in which I allowed others to carry more weight than they ought to. This was primarily due to overwhelmed personal circumstances I failed to disclose. I have been taking the last few years to learn to admit that I require help when needed and to communicate honest shortcomings to those who have a stake in my actions. It's my experience that integrity, rather than lack of error, is defined by your commitment to thoughtfully reflect on said failure. That is a metric that I applied in every team I am ever on, and to every promise I ever make, and to every conversation.

I am happy to join the National Honor Society due to its purpose of assembling a group of students based on the four core foundations of leadership, scholarship, character, and service. To me, leadership, scholarship, character, and service are the four interconnected components that define an individual's way of living rather than as distinct criteria on a checklist. The National Honor Society honors deserving individuals and encourages many other students toward excellence in the same four elements (National Honor Society, 2026). I resonate very strongly with this objective and mission.

Should I be accepted to be part of the National Honor Society, I shall not be an inactive member. My aim is to keep working towards service initiatives that are going to connect NHS members to a food distribution center I currently volunteer at, where there are needs to be filled and where service is frequent and active. I would like to become a mentor and tutor with other students to give them the same kind of help I gave Daniel at the library.

To me, the National Honor Society represents an opportunity to act on one's beliefs and values in collaboration with others. Therefore, I feel that this is an opportunity that I accept with great pleasure and humility, as I will be able to continue my own development and growth alongside my peers who motivate me to become the best version of myself.
