Admission Essay (Nursing)

As a product of a strict military background and having worked for more than 25 years as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), my journey to become a nurse has been defined and influenced significantly by commitment and compassion. This has helped me develop a high respect for diversity and a strong work ethic in patient care delivery, making it possible for me to perform well in diverse and demanding situations. From giving primary care to the elderly in nursing homes to providing comfort in palliative care, I have acquired critical interpersonal skills in communication, empathy and patient advocacy. These years have equipped me to deal with healthcare challenges and helped me define my identity. I am eager to contribute to improving nursing and apply my previous affiliation and personal motifs to an accelerated nursing program.

A Foundation of Compassion and Diversity

Growing up in a rural household that included parents in the military gave me the foundation of discipline, unity of purpose and good character. These principles went beyond being ideologies; they were the practices that became practical strategies with which I would tackle any problem and engage with others. The rigid schedules that come with military life and the frequent relocation to different places and cultures made me flexible and able to appreciate people's views. This background is instrumental in nursing as such attributes are directly linked to patients' quality of treatment. Moreover, the opportunity to live in such different states as a child helped me understand and respect other people's opinions and customs. Learning cultural competence began in my childhood and continued with every change of place and the new community my family integrated. These experiences created a valuable appreciation for people's differences and made me aware of the need to treat everyone with respect and tolerance in every circumstance.

The communication skills built upon this foundation have proved especially useful in my current position as a Certified Nursing Assistant because interaction with individuals of diverse cultural backgrounds is ever required. Through intercultural communication, I can identify with the patients and fellow workers of different origins, which enhances my ability to care for the patients and gain social trust. Every place has challenges and opportunities, and it has taught me how to deal with different patients and develop versatility in the healthcare field. Empathy and Communication

One of the core values in my practice has always been empathy, developed from numerous encounters with patients who have Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia. These have helped me improve my understanding of people who cannot be very articulate in their communication, establishing a bond beyond language. This skill is imperative because it allows me to notice and interpret signs that people are in pain, uncomfortable, or emotionally painful. The nature of nursing requires the provision of care and treatment in a short time and thus entails fast and efficient communication. My experience in catering to the sensitive needs of patients and efficiently managing human resources will be of great value in such settings. These attributes will enable me to work well in clinical settings where interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate important information to patients and other caregivers can significantly enhance the patient's experience and care.

Educational and Professional Goals

The accelerated 12-month Bachelor of Science in Nursing program represent an excellent opportunity for me to enhance my clinical proficiency and build on my knowledge base of nursing. This highly focused, all-encompassing course of study precisely aligns with my goal to move directly into a position that will allow me to build upon my wealth of experience in patient care. By accelerating my education, I will be on the right path to achieving my dream of becoming an accomplished nurse ready to meet the challenges of today's healthcare facilities. One area of focus that interests me most is specializing in hospice care, which is highly relevant to my personal and professional background. As a CNA for over twenty years, I have seen the urgency of tender and specific palliative care. This program will enable me to enhance my skills in improving the quality of services offered to patients, especially in their critical periods, by providing them with comfort and dignity.

My goal is not only to deliver outstanding patient care but also to be an advocate for informing the patient and their family about the dying process. The families must be educated on the real-life situations they are likely to encounter in the case of end-of-life care to reduce fear and misunderstanding and to be supported. By increasing my understanding of end-of-life care, I can better coordinate the care transition process and ensure that it is as dignified as possible for both the patient and the family. Ultimately, the increasing need for specialized skills in palliative care should be met urgently. As the population of the countries grows older and the frequency of terminal diseases increases, the need for qualified hospice care personnel will also be on the rise. I am ready to enter this niche and apply new skills to promote the policies and practices that will support terminally ill patients and their families. By completing this accelerated program, I will be well equipped to positively impact this area of healthcare and work towards making the dying process as dignified as possible.

As someone with a multicultural background and years of experience in patient care, I am well-prepared for the accelerated nursing program. I have gathered much experience and understanding of the human condition, especially in hospice care, which I am passionate about.
