Violence and Crime on Community Well-Being

Violence and crime can substantially impact a community by causing physical harm and emotional distress. The physical harm caused by a violent crime like assault or homicide causes injury, death, and long-term health outcomes to the victims (Office for National Statistics, 2022). Such people usually need medical help, and in other situations, even long-term disability. These crimes create emotional distress, and they are not just limited to the immediate victims, as families, friends, or even the broader society are affected by the crimes (Office for National Statistics, 2022). Crime rates resulting in high anxiety, fear, and vulnerability create social isolation, reduce lifespan, and a lack of community trust consequent to crime, making the community vulnerable.

Community’s Promotion of Violence

Poverty, crime, and lack of resources in neighborhoods frequently facilitate violence as people get a setting where crime is a survival strategy or a way to express themselves in society. In these communities, the economic opportunities may be nonexistent, and violent offenses can contribute to increased exposure to violence directly or by watching the violence committed (Foell et al., 2021). This influence may desensitize people, especially young people, so that violence becomes an acceptable reaction to stress or conflict. Also, the deprivation of means such as education and support systems leads to pessimism, which makes one more likely to resort to violence as a coping mechanism.
