The role of cultural competence in today’s society has become significant, particularly in relation to the practice of nursing. Cultural competence refers to the ability of healthcare providers to understand, respect, and effectively interact with patients from diverse cultural backgrounds. (Markey et al., 2021). This essay aims to discuss the topic- Cultural competence in nursing- including the significance of the concept, its effectiveness in nursing, and the ways of promoting it.

Cultural competence plays a very critical role in the nursing profession, and thus nurses need to be culturally competent in order to ensure that they achieve the intended health outcomes of their patients. Sometimes called variation, health disparities simply means that one group has better health and/or has better access to health care than another. Such inequalities are frequently attributed to social, economic, and environmental dynamics of vulnerability; many of which are culture-related. In addition, there is the centre of policies and stipulations in healthcare organizations, culminating in cultural competence. This entails the development ofa culturally sensitive care plan that delineates strategies and policies to be taken in the delivery of culturally competent care (Oikarainen et al., 2019). Audits and appraisals of the cultural competence practices should be conducted to determine any changes or gaps throughout the organization to meet the patient population’s cultural requirements.

In conclusion, cultural competence is a crucial component of the nursing practice that has a direct bearing to the prognosis of the patients. Increasing knowledge on culture will help the nurses to be more sensitive in the ways they handle their patients, decrease the gaps that exist in terms of provision of health care and also bridge the communication gaps. Education on culture, diverse workforce and supportive policies can help in improving the culture of the healthcare facilities to embrace everyone in equal regard and address the needs of the patient in a dignified manner (Oikarainen et al., 2019). Considering the trends of the population’s growth in terms of cultural and ethnic background, cultural competence in nursing will remain one of the most essential qualities in healthcare practice in the years to come.
