Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) threaten patient safety and are linked to significant morbidity and mortality rates. HAIs are also associated with a heavy financial burden due to resultant prolonged hospital stays and medication. The hospitals and the public healthcare system also bear the financial burden. Hospital-acquired infections affect a large population of people globally, making it a public health concern. Over the years, healthcare sectors across the world have implemented measures to prevent or lower the rate of HAIs, but have yet to succeed fully. For example, in the US, HAIs affect more than 1.7 million people every year (Haque et al., 2020). The high prevalence rate indicates a need to review the prevention strategies that have already been implemented. Due to the multifaceted nature of infection transmission, there is a need to use diverse prevention strategies. Such prevention strategies involve multiple stakeholders, including nurses, patients, hospital administrators, and policy-makers. Effective implementation of hand hygiene practices, maintaining a clean hospital environment, and antibiotic stewardship can prevent the transmission of nosocomial infections.

Hand hygiene for healthcare personnel and patients can prevent the acquisition and spread of HAIs. Healthcare personnel, such as nurses, have frequent and close contact with patients who have different illnesses. Without proper hand hygiene, it is easy to spread disease-causing organisms and microorganisms. Research reveals that effective implementation of hand hygiene practices can lower the incidence of hospital-acquired infections by 50% (Singh et al., 2023). However, most healthcare facilities, especially those with high workloads, record high rates of HAIs due to poor compliance with hand hygiene practices. Globally, only about 60% of healthcare personnel and patients adhere to hand hygiene practices (Singh et al., 2023). The need for more awareness about the effects of poor hand hygiene on HAIs lowers compliance with these practices. Investing in training personnel and patients on hand hygiene can significantly increase compliance, reducing the incidence of HAIs.

Maintaining a clean hospital environment reduces the risk of transmission through improved air quality. Infectious germs in the air can settle on surfaces in hospitals, and this is a quick way to spread them to the people around them. The cleanliness involves washing the surfaces and equipment, as well as ensuring safe waste disposal practices. According to Browne & Mitchell (2023), poor investment in high-quality cleaning agents, as well as poor implementation of cleaning routines, is a major barrier to maintaining a clean hospital environment. The solution to this issue would be training the personnel about the need for a clean environment. Healthcare facilities that maintain clean environments train their personnel on cleaning techniques and provide the necessary cleaning equipment. Budgetary constraints, especially in public hospitals, are a major barrier to maintaining a clean hospital environment.

Antibiotic stewardship controls the spread of HAIs by ensuring optimal selection and dosage of antimicrobial medications. Patients can develop antibiotic resistance due to misuse of the medicines, leading to increased rates of HAIs. By 2050, drug-resistant infections will contribute to 10 million deaths globally every year if the situation remains the same (Baudet et al., 2022). The high risk indicates that there is an urgent need to implement antibiotic stewardship across the world effectively. One of the best ways to achieve this is through diagnostic stewardship (Curren et al., 2022). The strategy entails ensuring optimal diagnosis and minimizing unnecessary medications to the patients. Controlling prescriptive authority is the other strategy that can help; it ensures that only the most suitable patients access the medication.

The healthcare sector can reduce the rate of HAIs through education and training. Healthcare personnel, such as nurses and pharmacists, need training on barriers to the prevention of HAIs, such as poor hand hygiene. Patient education is also important; the patients need information on hand hygiene, environmental cleanliness, and antibiotic resistance. Other stakeholders, such as hospital administrators, also have a significant role to play in preventing the spread of HAIs. They should ensure that the facilities successfully implement measures such as diagnostic stewardship and restraint of prescriptive authority. The collaboration of all the involved parties will lead to reduced incidents of HAIS.
