Mental health issues remain common among the adolescent population, raising concerns in public health. According to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2021), it is estimated that one adolescent in every six individuals is aged 10-19 years, which is the adolescent age, signifying that the population is widely distributed and contributes to global population growth. However, there is increased concern about their mental health and well-being, especially reports suggesting the population is being exposed to mental health conditions. Lack of effective treatment can create a poor quality of life and impaired academic performance among the population. The population will experience improved quality of life and educational performance with effective treatment modalities (World Health Organization, 2021). Cognitive-behavioral therapy is more effective than pharmacotherapy in reducing depressive symptoms and enhancing overall mental well-being. Therefore, this paper will explore the practical standards between the two in lowering depression symptoms and improving overall mental well-being among adults guided by the PICOT question.
PICOT Formatted Research Question
Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and pharmacotherapy remain the two common interventions for treating mental health disorders, particularly depression. Both have proven their efficacy, but their comparative need remains an area of concentrated research and healthcare debate. Therefore, there is a need to identify evidence-based for the two in this paper, which is guided by the following PICOT question: In adolescents aged 12-18 diagnosed with depression (P), how effective is cognitive-behavioral therapy (I) compared to standard pharmacotherapy (C) in reducing depression symptoms and improving overall mental well-being (O) over six months (T)?

Write my essayLiterature Review
A comprehensive literature review search has been conducted to answer the question, including an electronic search for scholarly articles based on the two interventions. Databases such as PubMed, PsycINFO, and Cochrane Library have been used to search for sources that will be utilized to analyze and synthesize the evidence. Keywords such as "adolescent depression," "cognitive-behavioral therapy," "pharmacotherapy," and "treatment efficacy" will be utilized to guide the search criteria. Inclusive criteria include articles in scholarly journals, published in the last five years, and published in English. Exclusive criteria include an article that was not scholarly published more than five years ago, an article not addressing cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and pharmacotherapy for mental health, and not published in an English version. The search strategy led to the selection of five studies, but 2 met the inclusive criteria and were involved in synthesizing the evidence.
Results
The study by Cuijpers et al. (2023) is a meta-analysis of clinical trials that purposed to identify the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy and pharmacotherapies in treating depression. The study utilized meta-analysis for the published journals in which 409 clinical trial research articles met the inclusion criteria. The study's results included cognitive behavioral therapy to contribute towards improved efficacy over other psychotherapies and provided slight differences over pharmacotherapy with the short-term plan of care. The study findings identify the combination of the two therapies as contributing to improved healthcare outcomes. Therefore, CBT is considered adequate as pharmacotherapy, but combining the two therapies remains crucial in healthcare. However, the results of the study findings can be predisposed to bias, which is a weakness following the study methodology.
The study by Idsoe et al. (2019) is a randomized controlled trial that was designed to identify the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy among adolescents diagnosed with depression. The quasi-experimental study recruited 133 adolescents to the intervention group and 95 adolescents to the control group. The intervention group received cognitive behavioral care, while the control group received standard pharmacotherapy. Data was collected through self-reported questionnaires, which included pre-and post-tests. The study findings included lower depression scores in the participants recruited to the intervention group compared to the control group, both pre-and post-test. Therefore, CBT is recommended for use in the treatment of adolescent depression and can be widely used by different healthcare providers, including close contacts of victims, such as teachers. However, the study results are limited to understanding the implementation criteria, which raises the need for future research on implementation criteria for CBT in different settings, such as healthcare and schools.
Discussion
Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and pharmacotherapy have the potential to improve mental health among adolescents, such as the management of depression. There has been increased debate over the comparative effects of the two. The analyzed literature identifies two to have clinical efficiency, significantly lowering depressive disorder. CBT has been identified as effective as pharmacotherapy and has provided promising results over pharmacotherapy, which answers the PICOT question. However, the article by Cuijpers et al. (2023) identifies combining the two as the potential solution to achieving improved mental healthcare outcomes for adolescents with depression. Therefore, mechanisms must be evaluated to identify various ways of combining the two interventions, especially the degree of patient symptoms.
Conclusion
Adolescent depression arises as a public health concern due to its increased rate and influence of poor productivity among the population. Effective treatment has the potential to promote improved mental well-being for the group. However, increased debate has arisen following the comparative effectiveness of CBT and pharmacotherapy. A literature review has shown that CBT is as effective as pharmacotherapy and can lead to improved outcomes over pharmacotherapy. Combining the two has been suggested and shown to have improved benefits, but the criteria for deciding when to combine the two have yet to be established. Therefore, the paper recommends future research to identify the mechanism of determining when to utilize both therapies.
