My motivation to pursue an advanced medical degree is rooted in my desire to connect the advancements of science with the needs of the patient population. Through my academic preparation and my experience in a hospital setting, I realized that effective medical care is more than just treating a patient's symptoms. It requires a comprehensive understanding of how diseases and conditions affect the individual and using this knowledge to enhance clinical practice through a scientific evidence-based approach. With this understanding, I can outline my aspirations for a career in the field of physician-scientist.
I developed a strong interest in medicine while working as a medical assistant and medical scribe. My work in these positions allowed me to see the many different things that can influence the decisions made by physicians regarding diagnoses and treatment options. I also learned a great deal about the ongoing management of a patient's health over time within a clinical environment. I had the opportunity to work with patients whose health was severely impacted by late diagnoses or a lack of access to appropriate care. This experience helped me recognize the critical need for physicians who will be involved in both the delivery of care and the development of better diagnostic and therapeutic options.

Order nowWorking with patients with both neurologic disease and cardiovascular disease has expanded my knowledge of health issues. These two groups of diseases have consistently been associated with the greatest burden on public health. I have seen firsthand the complications that arise from these diseases, which often continue long after they have been diagnosed. In addition, I have witnessed the ongoing impact of these diseases on individuals from low-income backgrounds. As a result of my exposure to these diseases, I am highly motivated to further my career. In medicine, one can enter a medical school and devote future efforts to addressing health disparities through both the practice of medicine and research.
I have a firm academic base in the field of biological science. I finished my undergraduate studies in biological science at the University of California, Riverside, in May 2023. Prior to receiving my Bachelor's degree, I completed my associate's degree in Biological Sciences at Los Angeles Pierce College. Throughout my education, I have shown great determination and flexibility to meet challenges head-on, and these experiences have fuelled my dedication to a career in the healthcare field and to continuing education.
Currently, I am enrolled in a post-baccalaureate program that is equipping me with a greater scientific knowledge base. This is helping me enhance my ability to be more academically prepared for the next step in my education, the eventual medical school level. This program has also allowed me to develop my academic discipline and improve the way I learn. More importantly, this program has confirmed my long-term career interests in medicine and research.
Through my involvement in biomedical research, I have been exposed to a significant portion of scientific investigation. While working with Dr. Arlin Blood in the Immunology and Inflammation Lab, I received hands-on experience in using immunohistochemical techniques. I have learned how to use KI-67 staining to determine if cells are multiplying. In this experience, I improved my ability to perform experimental analyses and follow laboratory processes. I increased my appreciation for the importance of precision, teamwork, and ethical practices in research.
I am completing a post-baccalaureate program that is preparing me with my knowledge base, as well as giving me the skills needed to be a competitive student to enter medical school. The post-baccalaureate program has allowed me to develop an academic discipline and also develop better methods for learning. Additionally, my experience in the post-baccalaureate program has solidified my commitment to a career in medicine and research.
During my experiences with biomedical research, I have been exposed to a large amount of research. While working in the Immunology and Inflammation Lab under the guidance of Dr. Arlin Blood, I have obtained hands-on experience with immunohistochemical techniques. For example, I learned how to use KI-67 staining to assess cell proliferation. This experience has strengthened my ability to conduct experiments and to adhere to laboratory protocols, while also giving me an appreciation for the importance of precision, team collaboration, and ethical principles in research.
The best that I can hope to accomplish in my work life is to study and treat patients utilizing the scientific discoveries from my research. For me, the first step of this journey is obtaining my medical doctor degree (MD) while I am still working on obtaining a post-baccalaureate degree in research or a similar field. After I complete my MD, I will continue to actively participate in medical and translational research activities leading up to and after completing my education. My ultimate goal in the long term will be to work in an academic medical centre or an affiliated clinical research environment, where I can conduct research, teach, mentor, and provide patient care.
The NIH Postbaccalaureate Program provides an excellent opportunity for me to make strides towards my long-term career goals because of its emphasis on training and mentorship. By working with highly accomplished researchers at the NIH, I will develop my experimental design and data analysis skills. Also, improve my ability to formulate sound and logical scientific conclusions, as well as strengthen my own independence to conduct research on my own. In addition, the program's focus on translating research into the clinic matches my goal of improving patient care through scientific discoveries.
Through the NIH Postbaccalaureate Program, I will also be equipped for medical school and gain experience about how to develop my career as a doctor. The NIH Postbaccalaureate Program will give me the training and tools necessary to shape my future career as a Physician-Scientist. At the same time, I continue to practice with compassion and scientific evidence in how I provide care. The NIH Postbaccalaureate Program allows me to be in a better position to positively affect the patient population through improvements in medical research and Practice.
