Organizational behavior and organizational change play a significant role in the development and transformation of healthcare organizations. In my view, organizational behavior is about the way people and groups behave in an organization and how this affects or can be made to affect organizational performance. Organizational change is the process by which an organization modifies its structure, environment, or direction in response to internal and external pressures. All these changes are relevant to health care with the aim of enhancing patient care, increasing service delivery quality, and containing costs. The force field analysis is a tool used to assess forces that facilitate change and those that resist it. This method involves identifying forces that are driving change and forces that are resisting change (Shafaghat et al., 2021). With knowledge of these forces, healthcare managers are in a position to organize how to enhance the driving forces while minimizing or eliminating restraining forces. For instance, in the healthcare sector, the driving forces may be technology and policy, while the restraining forces may be resistance to change from key stakeholders and financial constraints.
Healthcare managers can use force field analysis to bring about change by first defining what change is required and then identifying the driving and restraining forces within the organization. They can then develop action strategies to build up driving forces and manage restraining forces to ensure that the environment is favorable for change. Some of the basic enablers that help change occur within healthcare organizations are leadership support, communication, and employee involvement. On the other hand, barriers to change may encompass resistance to change, inadequate resources, and inadequate training. Understanding these factors enables healthcare managers to enhance their ability to apply planned changes and increase the organization’s efficiency.
