Letter to Parents on Suicide Prevention and Student Well-being

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We are so sorry to share that we have lost a student in our school family. This tragedy has undoubtedly affected each member of our community, and our hearts and prayers are with the student’s family and friends. In response, I would like to reassure you that the primary concern of our school community remains the emotional well-being and safety of each child. In this light, we have enhanced our access to the counseling department and have formed safe areas for students. Students have been taught to use these areas to express their feelings freely and to assist and guide one another in healthy ways. To identify early warning indicators and intervene promptly for pupils who require assistance, our team is also undergoing additional training.

It is important to understand that suicide is a very complex phenomenon and happens as a result of many interwoven factors, including, but not limited to: depression, anxiety, isolation, bullying, pathologic overwhelming academic stress, and personal issues etc. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2024) indicates that more than 30% of high school students experience a constant state of sadness or hopelessness, which supports the need for increased education and prevention of this condition. Espelage (2022) notes that early intervention, providing space in the school for communication between students and their families, and well-developed school programming yield significant results.

We urge our families to discuss their children’s thoughts and feelings in a kind open, and non-critical manner. Listening without judgement, reassuring them of your availability, and reminding them that it is an act of great courage to ask for help, are duties that each adult in our community can fulfill. Together, we will be learned to develop empathy, hope, and healing in our community.
