Any project’s success greatly depends on the leadership. The manner in which a project manager manages a team may significantly impact the project results, which may affect not only the team cooperation but also the possibility of meeting the deadline and avoiding exceeding the budget (Altaher et al., 2024). Transformational, transactional, and laissez-faire leadership styles have different effects on the success of a project. The mentioned leadership styles affect team dynamics and project outcomes, and they need to be matched to project requirements and team attributes.

Transformational leadership is regarded as the best model of encouragement towards innovation and a successful project. Transformational leaders motivate their staff/team by developing an appealing vision, promoting creativity, and challenging them to go beyond what they expect of themselves. It has been established that this style has a positive impact on a successful project since it facilitates teamwork and problem-solving (Altaher et al., 2024). Adamu et al. (2022) add that the emotional intelligence and capacity of transformational leaders to establish a healthy interpersonal relationship also contribute to their success in projects that need flexibility and innovativeness. Nevertheless, this leadership style will do well in complicated environments that are driven by changes, but it might have difficulties with projects where timelines are to be followed and structures are to be established.

Contrarily, transactional leadership is less flexible and task-based and concentrates on expectations, rewards, and punishments. This type of leadership is effective, especially in situations that require efficiency, accountability, and process conformity as a key concern. Research findings indicate that transactional leadership has been associated with the success of a project since members of the team accomplish certain objectives and targets within a given time (Abbas & Ali, 2021). Nevertheless, transactional leadership is very useful in routine or predictable projects, but does not allow creativity and restricts the flexibility required in dynamic environments. According to Adamu et al. (2022), transactional leadership is efficient in terms of dealing with more predictable projects and those that do not need much innovation, including construction or manufacturing projects.

The laissez-faire leadership style, characterized by minimal leader involvement and a hands-off approach, usually results in project failure. Even though this style may be effective in very independent teams, it usually results in confusion, ineffective communication, and poor project direction in the majority of projects. It has been discovered that laissez-faire leadership has a detrimental effect on team collaboration and the performance of the entire project, especially if the members of the team need to be directed and assisted (Altaher et al., 2024). Adamu et al. (2022) say that successful leaders should be capable of evaluating the situation and implementing the changes in leadership accordingly. Laissez-faire leadership is not usually effective and may lead to delays and a lack of morale in situations where the teams need more support and organization.

Conclusively, leadership style is a critical factor that can be used to determine the success of a project. Transformational leadership is best in complex or change-driven projects because it promotes innovation and flexibility, whereas transactional leadership is best in structured environments because it promotes accountability and efficiency. Although laissez-faire leadership would be appropriate in teams that are independent, it has poor results in most project contexts. The major secret of project success is the possibility to choose the most suitable leadership style depending on the nature of the project, the needs of the team, and the challenges peculiar to the project. Adaptable leaders capable of incorporating different leadership styles in their leadership style are better placed to lead their teams in ensuring the completion of their projects successfully.
