Growing up, I had a notion that I really wanted to do something related to engineering. As a young boy, I used to be fascinated by things built or designed. I would spend hours playing with mechanical toys and building complex models. What really inspired me was the idea of exercising an analytical mind toward finding solutions to complex problems and thinking up innovative solutions. However, a touching experience in life would finally turn the strings of my future ambitions. The way my mother is being nursed so compassionately and holistically by the nurses really inspired me to take nursing as my career so that I may be able to make something worthwhile in people's lives.
I was 15 years old when my mom took a bad fall, incurring a pretty bad fracture in her leg. It was very hard to watch her struggle through the pain and uncertainty of her recovery. Yet, within this period of confusion, there was one unending source of comfort: the dedicated team of nurses who cared for my mother during her stay at the hospital and afterwards in the rehabilitation period. From the moment she was admitted, the nurses displayed a very desirable concern for my mother's well-being. They handled her pain medication like pros, expertly changed her bandages, and helped her patiently through difficult physical therapy sessions. But beyond their clinical expertise, the nurses were able to display a very high level of empathy and compassion. They listened to my mother, allayed her fears, and gave her support during her periods of vulnerability.

Order nowI will never forget a nurse named Sarah who, when she saw that my mother was really anxious to become independent again, designed a sort of personal exercise program for her to enhance her confidence. Also, there was Juan, the nurse practitioner, who spent an hour with me discussing every aspect of my mother's injury and what the recovery timeline would be. Both my mother and I instilled a deep sense of commitment to delivering holistic, patient-centered care. However, as I watched how the nurses blended clinical skills with actual kindness, I once again began to question my career goals. In my opinion, even though engineering was challenging intellectually, it did not give me an opportunity to touch people's lives in such an important manner as nursing did. This idea of being able to ease suffering, promote healing, and empower patients to take an active role in their health care became very alluring to me.
I also met other important professionals in health care, like physical therapists and social workers, who played very instrumental roles in the recovery phase of my mother. This further raised my interest in the medical field, for I saw how all disciplines worked harmoniously and in sync with one another. I was encouraged by how these professionals used their different skill sets to provide complete, coordinated care—a model that, as a future nurse, I now aspire to emulate. Attending with interest, I watched the health team integrate efforts together. I appreciated how interdisciplinary patient care was. The physical therapists also provided close collaboration with the nurses while developing my mother's rehabilitation plan, and the social workers ensured she would have all the resources and support systems available to make her transition back home as smooth as possible.
Ultimately, what drives my decision to pursue nursing is the deeper need to tangibly make a difference in the lives of others. I will be driven by the prospect of being in a position to offer that same support, compassion, and expertise that those nurses were able to offer my mother at a time when she needed it most. I look forward to developing clinical competence, critical thinking, and an empathetic disposition characteristic of the finest nursing practice as I begin this journey. In fact, one of the other things that truly excites me about this profession is the numerous opportunities available in acute care settings and the specialty areas of community health and education. In this way, it fits pretty well with my personal intellectual curiosity and love for learning.
