Defining Ethics

Ethics refers to a section of philosophy that concerns matters of wrong and right in human activities. This broad definition covers a vast topic that affects all aspects of our lives. When we consider ethics, we must look at our ideas of right and wrong. We must also observe how these beliefs influence our work and the individuals surrounding us. Ethics can be highly relevant in nursing school and for future nurses. This essay will discuss my definition of right and wrong, the association of ethics with nursing school, and the role of ethics in professional nursing practice.

My Definition of Right and Wrong

Right and wrong are about showing respect and kindness towards others. Right actions are good and can help people, and incorrect actions are bad and can worsen the situation of people. To be right in most instances is to demonstrate honesty, fairness and awareness of the emotions and needs of others. Such evils are more likely to be lying, unfair, or indifferent towards how our actions influence other people. My family, culture, and life experiences also influence my beliefs about what is right and what is not. These values influence my decision-making in my daily life and my treatment of people I encounter.

Ethics in Nursing School

Ethics is a significant factor in nursing school since the students are taught to take the health and lives of people in their care. In nursing school, we must know how to be honest about what we know and what we still have to know. We should not tell lies about our qualifications or say we are knowledgeable about something that we do not know, since this would bring harm to the patients. According to Theodosopoulos et al. (2025), as future nurses, we must train to be trustworthy and responsible since these two attributes will hold great significance once we become actual nurses.

Ethics in Professional Nursing Practice

Ethics play a critical role, as the lives of individuals rely on good nursing. Nurses have a duty to put the needs of their patients first and offer the best care to them. They should avoid disclosing patient information to other workers, and only to those requiring it. Nurses should also be fair to all patients regardless of their background, race, or beliefs. According to Dunlap and Michalowski (2024), good nurses adhere to such rules as honesty, harmless actions, and assisting patients to make personal decisions regarding their treatment.

In conclusion, ethics contribute to good nursing practice and help nurses make the correct decisions. My personal sense of right and wrong is based on how we treat other people with respect and kindness in any situation. In nursing school, ethics teaches us to be responsible, honest, and trustworthy in our studies. Ethics guide us to administer safe, equitable, and empathetic care to every patient as professional nurses. Being aware and adhering to ethical principles will help me become a better nursing student today, but also help me become a better nurse in the future.
