Argumentative Essay Against Cancel Culture

In a world where everyone is encouraged to exercise their freedom of speech, cancel culture is a disadvantage to this freedom. Cancel culture has become one of the most pressing topics in modern American society. It is perceived as social ostracism, often occasions that stem from the public’s rage against the individuals or agencies that fail to conform to the norms of civil society. Some enthusiasts of cancel culture argue that it is a wake-up call for people to face the consequences of what they do and serves as a reminder of social justice. This essay argues against cancel culture in America since it goes against the freedom of speech and lacks due process, thus undermining the fundamental principles of justice and fairness and also facilitates social polarization and division.

The idea of cancel culture threatens democracy and the freedom of speech. A significant component of any democracy is freedom of speech, which, in this case, refers to the ability of people to exercise their opinions without harsh criticism. However, the phenomenon of cancel culture is a powerful tool in discouraging independent thinking and nonconformity today. In research by Ekins (2020), 62% of the participants claimed that they had learned to censor themselves regarding their political stance because of adverse consequences. This evidence supports cancel culture's profound impact on free speech and diversity of thought. For example, celebrities and researchers have been criticized and even penalized for their opinions and actions that may offend others and discourage them from fruitful discussions. Additionally, the lack of due process makes cancel culture a protest against justice and equity, threatening society’s framework. Cancel culture is a phenomenon that functions without the legal and moral frameworks of the legal system’s due process and common concepts of justice, where people accused or attacked by social media users are punished with little to no trial at all. Without an opportunity to defend oneself or receive a fair trial, people are exposed to an unfair punishment of losing their reputation and their jobs, which also affects their mental health. On the other hand, supporters of cancel culture believe that the practice helps bring people and organizations justice. They argue that canceling individuals over their problematic behavior is the right way to address social inequity. However, cancel culture involves punishment and the lack of an opportunity to improve. Instead of encouraging healthy discussion and enlightenment, it sanctions consequences more than the correction, emphasizing penalty over reformation (Oliveira, 2021). Furthermore, the role of cancel culture in applying public shaming and ostracism makes it inefficient in creating the desired change. Rather than stimulating rational discussion and social cooperation, it fosters suspicion and hostility and facilitates social divisions.

In conclusion, although the intentions of cancel culture are noble because it promotes justice and seeks to hold perpetrators accountable for their wrongs, there are essential issues with freedom of speech, fairness, and society's overall stability. The limitation of political freedoms, the absence of procedural justice, and the increase in polarization indicate a need for a better strategy for tackling societal problems. Instead of using threats to punish those with different opinions, the best approach in dealing with social issues should be understanding and accepting different opinions and ideas. Thus, by finding common ground in the principles of tolerance and diversity, it is possible to work towards creating a better society with fewer prejudices and injustices.
