Ladies and gentlemen, our honourable graduates, parents and my fellow teaching fraternity, as the head teacher of this school, I am honoured to be part of the journey so far. I look at the young graduates before us, splendidly dressed and smiling in anticipation, and I beam with satisfaction. I am proud because you look so sharp, crisp and confident. The future cannot wait to welcome you with both hands. I am so happy. We have come so far. I remember most of you being brought here on your first day of schooling. Some of you were ready to learn. While some still clung to their parents, wondering why they were being taken to a new place. You clung to the coats of your dads and the tails of your mother’s skirts.  I understand you did not want to leave the comfort, warmth and love of your homes.

Those days were both challenging and fulfilling. We worked hard to make you feel at home, even when some of you were crying out for your parents, guardians and other caregivers. We tried to help you trust the environment, and I am glad that, with time, you adjusted. We assured you and made you understand that you would receive the same affection from our teachers. My heart was glowing with pride each day, as I saw you manipulating toys, writing, colouring, and playing.

I am aware that this occasion would not be possible without the friendship that you have formed over the few years we have been together. Sometimes you fought, but you reconciled. Other times you cried, but a friend hugged and reassured you that it would be all right. A few of you preferred to play on your own, but with time, you learned to collaborate. Sometimes I observed one urging the other to paint correctly, to perform sculpting activities and even do more when you were outside playing in the sand. My dear, young graduates, you may not realize this, but what you did was very important. Your teamwork showed that when you work together, success is guaranteed. You are a special group because you made everyone involved, engaged and part of something great.

The role played by the teachers

Any outsider may think that educating and training the children is easier. They need to come to the school, observe and even interact with us to have a glimpse of the daily challenges.  A person who has not interacted with the teachers may not appreciate the role they play in shaping the minds, bodies, and spirits of these precious jewels. I have been part of you guys, and I understand what you go through. Training a child till they graduate from pre-school is difficult. It requires grit, resilience and sacrifice. There may not be enough compensation to appreciate you guys, but all I can say is thank you.

Thank you, dear teachers, for being more like parents in the pre-school. This pre-school graduation speech would not have been possible had you not handled the developmental needs of every child with grace and understanding. It was hard to deal with a child unable to wear a sweater properly and was still stubborn. The home economics teacher found it hard to deal with another one who had spilt their tea during break time and was throwing a tantrum.

The job you did required not only understanding but emotional control. It needed patience, and I can bet you were more of parents than the teachers. The role you played in moulding these children is just the beginning. I urge you not to tire of educating, mentoring, and holding their hands.  Your impact on the lives of these children will live on forever.

I thank the parents for trusting your children with us. I am proud of your dedication, and I want to appreciate you for coming. Thank you for providing the fees and other requirements on time. Your sacrifice to ensure that your child was provided for cannot go unnoticed. I know that this is just the beginning, but I pray that you never lack resources, wisdom, knowledge and understanding to raise the beautiful angels here.

Thanks to everyone who has played a part in getting us here today. This is indeed a time for celebration because, as I earlier said, the journey has not been easy. My dear graduates, have fun, and I wish you success in the years ahead. To more success, friendship, fun and learning. Cheers to our graduates, parents and teachers. The journey has just started.
