Research

DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is a molecule that delivers the genetic data of all the known living things and most of the viruses. The molecule of DNA was found to be made up of a double helix model created by two long strands made of simpler molecules known as nucleotides. A nucleotide comprises a phosphate group, a sugar molecule, and a nitrogen-containing base. Arranged in a sequence, these bases consist of adenine, thymine, cytosine, and guanine and hold the genetic information. The discovery of the DNA structure by James Watson and Francis Crick in 1953 turned biology into a new page of advancement in genetics and biotechnology (Tan & McCoy, 2020). Current research on DNA involves different areas, such as gene modification, which involves eradicating or modifying one gene and introducing a new one using technology like CRISPR-Cas9 (Ayanoglu et al., 2020). Epigenetics is another theme of interest; it explores how the genetic profile influences the organism in response to the environment without involving changes to the DNA code.

Knowledge of DNA structure and function is crucial for many reasons. On a personal level, it assists one in understanding the mode of inheritance of health and disease, which are crucial to everyone's decision-making process regarding their health status. Understanding DNA can enhance the community's health programs, such as screening programs that aid in identifying those at risk of gene-related diseases and conditions; therefore, early management can be procured. The consequences of DNA investigations are significant at the societal level. It also starts to pose various social issues related to genetic engineering, privacy issues linked to genetic information, and genetic discrimination (CDC, 2022). Knowledge of DNA is also connected with other classifications in the biosphere, including heredity, evolution, and biodiversity, which make life an interrelated existence. Notably, this is a brilliant promise that the latest DNA advancements and technologies can help solve these global concerns, ranging from genetic disorders to food shortages and climate change.
