Origin

Developed by McCormack and McCance, the Person-Centred Care Nursing (PCN) Framework theory resulted from past empirical research that focused on individual-centred practice with the senior or elderly and the nursing practice in the care process. Carl Rogers, a renowned psychologist, pioneered the humanistic concept of client-centred treatment in the 1950s. He eventually changed its name to person-centred therapy (Butts & Rich, 2021). Rogers emphasized the need for a relationship with a sincere, open, accepting, and supportive therapist and the capacity to listen with empathy and understand the client's point of view. He believed that an individual's expectations and experiences are the basis for efficient treatment approaches and interventions. The framework stemmed from McCance's framework, centred on nurses' and patients' experiences of care in nursing, and McCormack's theoretical model, which focused on person-centred care for the elderly (Butts & Rich, 2021). Later on, Tom Kitwood introduced facets of communication and relationships to reinforce the framework.

Meaning and Scope

These obstacles include staffing, health insurance, social services, governmental policy, lack of opportunities for continuous learning, and a deficiency in cultural competence.

Usefulness and simplicity

The Person-Centred Care Nursing theory is a useful framework in nursing and clinical-related fields of practice, such as social work, Medicine, dentistry, and psychology. The primary goal of the PCN theory is to enhance individuals’ health outcomes, promote positive relationships between patients and providers, boost patient satisfaction, and ensure increased quality of care (Haydon et al., 2018).

Parsimony

Person-centred care in nursing fosters equitable access to quality health care, promotes enhanced patient care outcome,s and aids in reducing healthcare costs. It is mainly associated with diminished prevalence in hospital readmissions, shorter hospital stays, and enhanced patient satisfaction.

Generalizability and Testability

Person-centred care is testable and generalizable. The PNC theory is extensively applied in modern-day healthcare settings and has gained widespread acceptance among nursing and other professions across the globe. Research has it that the principles of the person-centred nursing care framework are mirrored in the behaviours and interactions of nurses in their day-to-day job and their awareness of the patient's individuality and use of knowledge to modify their care (Eklund et al., 2019). Effective leadership, introspection, role modelling, and applying the PNC model within the workplace could aid in further enhancement and result in effective nursing practice. By providing a safe, hospitable, and reassuring environment, through transformational leadership that fosters advanced application of the PNC model, clients seeking psychiatric healthcare services can better understand their previous experiences and how they impact their feelings about themselves in efforts directed towards attaining positive change. PNC theory’s focus on holistic care offers significant support to the role of a psychiatric nurse practitioner by allowing for positive provider-client relationships, cultural competence, and ethical practice that is founded on respect for the individual identity and autonomy.
