Role of Technology in Education

Technology is one of the most important factors that has revolutionized education in the 21st century. Technology has changed the ways of teaching and learning in the classroom, from whiteboards to laptops and tablets. While technology has advantages, it also has disadvantages, such as distraction and dependency. Technology enhances the students’ involvement in the learning process. Smart boards, tablets, quiz applications, and virtual reality make students attentive and eager to embrace the knowledge. These technologies enhance learner participation as students can contribute, cooperate, construct, and consolidate knowledge. For instance, an English teacher can ensure students are involved by having them highlight key segments in a novel using an e-reader application. Such active learning enhances understanding of concepts and facilitates knowledge retention for longer periods (Mdhlalose et al. 60). Furthermore, learning through games and simulation software that help students continue learning independently has been a joy. Therefore, technology brings about new ideas and features of interactivity to capture the attention of digital-born students.

Further, technology allows for new methods of teaching that were not possible before. Systems such as classroom response systems help a teacher understand the students within the class and make necessary changes. Globally, there are innovations such as the flipped classroom, where students study concepts online at home and have discussions in class or vice versa. The above models of blended learning allow for differentiation of the students and group work. At the same time, applications for voice control or text-to-speech help students with learning disabilities to address learning difficulties (Mdhlalose et al. 55). Therefore, technology has changed the learning process by making it more focused on students, versatile, and friendly with them. The use of technology needs to be well managed in a way that supports the student’s learning experience rather than becoming a disruptive factor.

The use of technology in education has become common in modern education systems, as it increases students’ interest and facilitates new approaches to teaching. However, for technology integration to occur in a school, teachers require training and resources to use it effectively in teaching and learning. In contrast, students require direction on how to use the technology effectively. While implementing these new technologies poses certain barriers, learners' gains far exceed the obstacles. However, technology is very useful when appropriately employed; it shall remain essential in enhancing teaching and learning in the 21st century. Therefore, it is the task of the policymaker and the educator to unlock it.
