Patient Advocacy in Nursing Practice

Advocacy that prioritizes patient rights manifests in several ways in my nursing practice. These advocacies are essential for respecting patients’ wishes and promoting their health. One common form of advocacy in my nursing practice is the concept of comprehensible and efficient informed consent processes for patients and their families. This advocacy encompasses translating the medical process description, the potential harm, and the other options in a way that makes the patient capable of making decisions (Alanezi, 2021). In this context, I respect the patient’s right to autonomy through promoting excellent communication and understanding between the patient and myself or other healthcare professionals.

Another advocacy in my practice is addressing inequality in the provision and outcomes of health care services. This advocacy involves advocating for patients who may be locked out of a health facility, need help understanding the local language, or do not share the same culture with the majority population (Flaubert et al., 2021). For example, I sometimes cooperate with social workers or interpreters to guarantee patient equality in healthcare service provision and comprehend the treatment options. I aim to decrease health holism and increase health equality by presenting the need for standardized care referrals for patients of color and other marginalized groups.

Furthermore, the promotion of the safety of patients is part of my nursing practice. This can include appealing for appropriate medication administration policies to making concerns over inadequate staffing, which could endanger patient safety and the public (Kerley & Toney-Butler, 2020). Thus, when on duty, I zero in on possible special populations and risks to ensure that the healthcare setting is as safe as possible to enhance patient health. Both articulated examples demonstrate that advocacy is an ongoing endeavor integral to my nursing practice to improve patient's well-being and promote sound ethical principles.

In summary, it is crucial to recognize that advocacy is central to the delivery of nursing care and comprises actions that aim to enhance patient capacity, eliminate prejudice, and protect patients. By incorporating advocacy as an essential component of care, nurses meet their professional obligation to promote patients' rights and interests.
