Hypertension or high blood pressure is a severe medical condition that has a close connection with cardiovascular disease, stroke, and kidney failure. The World Health Organization (2023) reports that the present global prevalence of hypertension stands at 1.13 billion people, and of these, two-thirds live in developing nations. Today, about 47 % of the adult population in the United States, 116 million people, are obese (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2023). Hypertension was cited as the primary reason for death for almost half a million individuals in the U. S. in 2018 alone. Therefore, knowing the primary causative sources of this health issue and how to combat these sources is imperative for public health.

Poor diet is one of the biggest causes of hypertension in the modern world. Eating processed foods and foods with high salt and saturated fat can increase blood pressure. The WHO (2024) recommends reducing salt intake to less than 5 grams daily, yet many people need to pay more attention and consume much less. For example, processed and fast foods often contain high sodium levels, contributing significantly to daily intake. Additionally, diets low in fruits and vegetables rich in potassium, magnesium, and fiber can exacerbate the problem. Individuals who consume more fruits and vegetables have lower blood pressure than those who do not.

Another significant factor is physical inactivity. The modern lifestyle, characterized by sedentary work environments and leisure activities such as watching television and using computers, has reduced the overall physical activity levels in the population. Regular exercise helps maintain a healthy weight and lowers blood pressure by strengthening the heart and improving blood flow. The American Heart Association (2024) recommends 30 minutes of vigorous walking most days of the week to reduce blood pressure by 5-8 mm Hg.

Obesity is closely linked to hypertension. Excessive weight amplifies the burden on the cardiovascular system, resulting in higher blood pressure. The CDC (2024) reports that nearly 40% of adults in the United States are obese, and obesity increases the risk of developing hypertension significantly. Furthermore, body fat distribution, particularly around the abdomen, is critical. Visceral fat is more strongly associated with hypertension than fat distributed in other areas.

Stress is an additional causative element of elevated blood pressure. Chronic stress can lead to unhealthy behaviors such as poor diet, physical inactivity, and increased alcohol consumption, all of which are risk factors for hypertension. Furthermore, stress can directly elevate blood pressure by stimulating the secretion of stress hormones, which cause the narrowing of blood vessels. According to Spruill et al. (2019), chronic stress increases the risk of hypertension among the population. Furthermore, family history or inherited genetic abnormalities are other causes of hypertension. High blood pressure is heritable; therefore, if one or both parents are hypertensive, then the person is more likely to be hypertensive. However, lifestyle and genetics are intertwined, and one can reduce the probability of inherited genes by adopting healthy lifestyles like eating correctly, exercising, and controlling stress.

Strategies for Tackling Hypertension

The management of hypertension involves factors varying from the individual to the community level. On a personal level, people should ensure they take balanced diets, be active, achieve a healthy weight, manage stress, and avoid tobacco and excessive alcohol, which may lead to hypertension. For instance, the DASH diet focuses on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins, which reduces blood pressure (Challa & Uppaluri, 2023).

At the community level, public health activities are known to have significant contributions to make. Strategies that include increasing healthier food accessibility in schools and workplaces, providing safe environments for physical activity, and reducing the promotion of unhealthy foods can assist. Public health initiatives involving BP checks and health promotion campaigns are equally effective. For instance, the CDC's "Million Hearts" campaign focuses on reducing one million heart attacks and strokes through practical care, better health, and community support (CDC, 2023a).

In conclusion, high levels of hypertension in modern society result from diet and lack of exercise, obesity, stress, and heredity. It is possible to tackle this critical health concern and enhance the quality of cardiovascular health by using appropriate measures both on personal and community levels.
