Ambition in Macbeth

In Macbeth, Shakespeare explores the destructive nature of ambition through the character of Macbeth, who becomes increasingly consumed by his desire for power. At the beginning of the play, Macbeth is a loyal subject to King Duncan, but after encountering the three witches, his ambition is awakened. Their prophecy that he will become king ignites a strong desire for power within him. His ambition is further fueled by Lady Macbeth, who manipulates him, questioning his masculinity and urging him to murder Duncan to seize the throne.

Shakespeare portrays ambition as a corrupting force, and Macbeth’s internal struggle with his ambitions is evident. Initially, Macbeth is hesitant and filled with guilt over the prospect of murdering Duncan. However, his ambition ultimately overpowers his moral hesitations, leading him to commit regicide (Knowles, 2009). Once he becomes king, his ambition grows, and he becomes paranoid, driven to commit further acts of violence, such as the murder of Banquo and others who threaten his reign. The consequences of Macbeth's ambition are portrayed through his gradual mental and emotional deterioration. He becomes increasingly isolated, with his guilt and paranoia pushing him further into madness. As Knowles (2009) notes, Macbeth’s unchecked hunger for power is akin to an insatiable appetite, which leads to his ultimate downfall. His ambition distorts his perception of reality, and his actions cause both his personal destruction and the disintegration of the kingdom he seeks to control. In the end, Macbeth’s ambition, once the driving force of his rise to power, is the very thing that leads to his death and the restoration of order in Scotland.
