Within this perspective, quality appraisal is a safeguard, guaranteeing that nursing actions are grounded in empirical data and advancing the objective of providing safe and high-quality healthcare.

An over-dependence on reductionist, quantitative methods may limit the depths of nursing knowledge. The quality appraisal's emphasis on quantifiable results could minimize the complexity and uniqueness that are integral to human experiences. Furthermore, by stressing how knowledge is socially created, a constructivist lens opposes the positivist viewpoint. Within this viewpoint, we employ quality appraisal as a collaborative process, acknowledging that evidence does not come only from objective studies but also from the opinions of patients and healthcare providers. Using this lens, palliative care nurses can better integrate many types of information, such as contextual and experience insights, to provide more patient-centered treatment. As Wong and Kowitlawakul (2020) explained, some critical theorists contended that EBP unintentionally reinforces current power structures and prevailing ideologies. Critical appraisal must be undertaken concerning the range of experiences and values in palliative care to avoid potential biases in the generation of evidence.
