Compare and Contrast LPN vs RN Roles

Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) and Registered have related, yet distinct roles. In this regard, LPNs often work under the direction of RNs, physicians, and dentists, with major roles focused on medication administration and treating patients. Although roles differ depending on a specific state, the primary differentiation is the complexity of the assigned tasks and the application of the scope of practice. At the same time, RNs are relatively independent and include interpreting patient information, as well as treating the sick and dying. Therefore, as related to roles, LPNs work under RNs, who have a more flexible scope of practice and can administer medications and treat patients, functions that may be limited for LPNs.

LPNs have a limited scope of practice due to their training and credentials. However, LPN roles have various similarities to those of RNs, and encompass patient monitoring by assessing comfort level and tending to patients, although limited and supervised by RNs (Alexander, 2022). At the same time, LPNs offer comfort to patients and families, take blood pressure, change bandages, and insert catheters, depending on patient-specific needs. Other roles encompass promoting and optimizing basic comfort to the patients, and strictly adhering to nursing plans while administering treatments to patients, as supervised by RNs, physicians, and other healthcare staff (Alexander, 2022). LPNs collect patient data and record findings for other care staff to review. Subsequently, although LPNs work independently, they are supervised by RNs.

RNs perform more complex roles, although closely related to LPNs. In such a case, RNs record medical histories and symptoms, often in a managerial role, including as relationship builders, outreach professionals, care coordinators, as well as program facilitators (Swanson et al., 2020). In this regard, RNs record medical histories and symptoms, find cases, teach patients and families about medication side effects, and assist them in finding relevant resources. Other roles include educating people on disease and disease processes, healthcare management, and disease prevention. RNs offer mental health services and addiction counseling, triaging and assessing patients, and administering medications and treatments to the patients. Regarding differences, the primary distinctions include task orientation. As a result, LPNs are more task-driven and offer basic care and comfort to patients, as supervised by other healthcare professionals (Alexander, 2022). LPNs have a lower level of independence and are involved in providing actual treatments to patients. On the contrary, RNs primarily focus on medication administration, treating patients, and educating them on various components, such as disease management and preventive care (Swanson et al., 2020). In some states, RNs can administer medications, including controlled substances under schedule II to IV, while LPNs cannot due to a limited scope of practice.
