The integration of social media has brought significant changes in how youths engage, communicate, and perceive the world. Social media applications such as Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok have become essential components of young people's lives, as they allow them to remain connected and express themselves. However, despite the stated advantages, social media has many negative impacts that have affected the youths in a more detrimental way than a positive way. Due to the widespread application of these sites, several undesirable impacts have been realized, for instance, deterioration of mental health and violation of privacy, among others, discouraging negative behaviors. On the mental aspect of life, one of the worst effects of social media on youths is that it causes mental illnesses. Another area of concern is that protracted exposure to those images and lifestyles can have negative effects, including anxiety and depression. Thus, those who become victims of such cyber persecution may suffer from significant levels of emotional distress, which has lifelong consequences for their psychological well-being.

Several adverse effects may result from using social media, and parents, educators, and policymakers should ensure young people are not adversely affected. Therefore, if these challenges are effectively handled, then people can maximize the positive effects of social media without bringing harm to the youth.
