Importance of Critical Thinking

The element of critical thinking is most valuable in today's society and the world in general, as it contains a lot of information and technological developments. It forms the foundation for individual development, career advancement, and societal improvement. The capacity to reason promotes responsibility in decision-making processes and helps people deal with life’s problems. Its relevance is not only in self-actualisation, interpersonal communication, problem-solving, and organisational decision-making but also in fostering an equal and worthy society.

One of the most significant strengths of critical thinking is that it helps people to develop and become who they really want to be. Critical thinking enhances one’s thinking process, open-mindedness, and willingness to perceive things from other perspectives that are not limited by emotional reactions (Potter, 2022). This freedom of thought promoted by existentialism allows people to escape from the strictly defined frameworks of thought and actions while offering an opportunity to cast off the strict social roles and become oneself (Bashori et al., 2022). Similarly, developing a growth mindset stems from cultivating a new thinking pattern, formally known as the critical thinking pattern, whereby one has the belief that his or her intelligence and abilities can be changed for the better by hard work, thereby improving his or her existence.

In addition, critical thinking is applied and appreciated in the area of communication. To promote reasoning, critical thinkers can support a claim by testing and making critical judgments on other people’s ideas. They are capable of responding to opposite dualisms through the use of logical arguments that cannot be easily dismissed (Bar-Tal et al., 2021). In an environment where all the available information is highly questionable, critical thinking skills remain inarguably beneficial. This way, an individual is able to avoid being influenced by emotions or cultural bias; thus, they will be able to identify hidden agendas. Therefore, the enhancement of critical thinking skills promotes empathy and active listening, which makes it possible to utilise nonviolent communication and pursue open dialogue to understand each other and offer assistance. Such approaches constitute the cornerstones of social, professional, and interpersonal behaviours.

Critical thinking also plays a role in the process of evaluation since it requires the assessment of existing evidence, other available choices, and their implications. Since critical thinking promotes maintaining an impartial standpoint and low sensitivity to stimuli and emotions, it enables achieving an accurate and ethical approach to decision-making (Aston, 2023). A quality such as this is of paramount value in our every day and working lives, and we often have to make decisions that seem mundane but may lead to significant consequences. For this reason, critical thinking produces unique thought patterns over short-term and long-term consequences, including the adverse effects that drive the search for fitting solutions that respect liberty, integrity, and the environment.

Although critical thinking does imply the cultivation of sound thinking, the essence and core purpose of critical thinking is to prepare individuals to counter antagonistic ethical systems. It is a system that promotes justice and tolerance with people of different social backgrounds; it demands collaboration and searching for the truth, which is the definition of objectivity from people with different perspectives. For the purpose of attaining social justice, critical thinking enables a person to analyse the prejudices and affiliations with oppressed groups. In turn, critical thinking functions as the essential enabler for anyone who wishes to progress in his or her career and work on one’s personal improvement as well as for the sake of solving multiple problems in society.
